Ruins of a Teutonic castle
In the isthmus between the lakes of Dąbrowa Wielka and Dąbrowa Mała are the remains of a Teutonic castle from the early 14th century, called a little castle, which was destroyed during World War II. Nevertheless, the southern wing has been partially preserved, and it is an attraction for tourists and history buffs of Western Masuria. The castle is an interesting object for two reasons – the original oldest part is an example of a small castle just for the needs of an alderman, while the whole, with the remains of an extensive park, presents an example of a landed gentry residence which are numerous in the area.
It’s very likely that before the Teutonic Knights’ stronghold, one of the Prussian tribes (Sasna) had their defensive structure here. And it’s not the only fortified settlement in the municipality. Those interested will find more such structures in the municipality of Dąbrówno.

Settlements in the Municipality of Dąbrówno
All the documented settlements are located in Dąbrówno, Stare Miasto, Gardyny and Leszcz.
Unfortunately, not all of them have survived in good condition to the present day. They are often traces of the beginnings of the Teutonic Knights’ activities in the area, and traces of earlier settlements, that is, traces of the Prussian Sasna tribe.
It's worthwile to find other former Sasna strongholds and enjoy the panorama of the area and feel the atmospere of the old times.
